Let’s start with the Living Room
When picking out and placing a rug in your living room, it’s important to put together an inviting space that’s centered around seating, creating a focused area for the family to gather. The typical sizes for a great living room rug are 8×10, 9×12, and 10×14. Before purchasing a rug though, you first need to measure!!
Measuring is SO important: too small of a rug and it can make the room look smaller than it is – too large and it can look awkward, like wall to wall carpet that wasn’t quite finished. The size of your rug should be measured to leave about 6-8 inches of length on either side of your sofa.
Next, is placing – when placing a rug and furniture, be sure to set the front legs of your seating (sofa and chairs) on the rug. By backing your furniture up a bit and only placing the front legs on the rug, it allows your space to breathe – making your room feel more open and spacious!
Diving into Dining Rooms
Dining Rooms are where we come together to enjoy delicious food with family and friends. You know the old saying, “First, you eat with your eyes.” – so an inviting dining space is the perfect way to start off dinner. Typical dining room rug sizes are 6×9, 8×10, and 9×12. But when it comes to picking out your dining room rug, most designers agree: biggier is usually better! A rug that’s too small can quickly become a headache when frequently pulling chairs in and out from the table. Chair legs can easily become snagged on the edge of a rug and before you know it, your rug will be curling up around the edges, or possibly damaged.
When measuring for your dining room rug, make sure any table leaves that you use and extra chairs are being included in the measurement. You’ll want to measure at least 8 inches from the backs of your dining chairs on all four sides. To ensure this is enough space, pull your chairs out from the table as if you’re going to sit down and check to see if the chair would still remain on the rug. A dining room rug should be large enough that chairs do not catch on the edge when trying to “scoot” in.
Picking out your style of rug can sometimes be overwhelming with all of the beautiful choices available – but a key thing to keep in mind when choosing a rug for your dining room…
Save the Shag for another day! Aka: look for something with a short pile, that’s durable and easy to clean. Dining rooms can get messy – whether it’s red wine or sticky macaroni and cheese, accidents can happen no matter what age you are, so you’ll want to make sure your dining rug isn’t easy to ruin! Make sure to choose something that can stand up to your everyday wear and tear.
Bedroom Basics
The most important thing when choosing a rug for your bedroom is the size of your bed! Real Kings and Queens may come in all shapes and sizes but when it comes to mattresses, the standard dimensions are almost always the same!
Measure 8 inches from both sides of the bed for he width of your rug and 12 inches from the foot of your bed, for the length. Typical rug size for Queen beds is 8×10, while the typical size for King beds is 9×12 but you can always go bigger! When choosing the style of rug for your bedroom, the answer is simple – go for whatever feels comfortable to you! A bedroom is where you go to relax and unwind so you’ll want something that feels nice on your feet. Once you’ve chosen the right rug for you, you’ll need to “install” it. Similar to placing a rug in the living room, only the “front” feet or in this case, the footboard should be placed on the rug leaving your nightstands and headboard off of your rug…
